Activities

Bala Vihar

Bala Vihar aims to inculcate in our children and youth a reverence for our ancient culture, and inspire them to live up to it with correct understanding. To create self-confidence so that they are able to serve and act cheerfully. To generate personal discipline, dynamic leadership, and true affection in all their contacts. To develop a healthy resistance against temptations in the environment in which they grow.

In Bala Vihar, the rich cultural heritage of India, including moral values, are taught to children and youth at different levels, using the medium of stories, drama, arts, crafts and discussion. Children are also taught popular Bhajans and Slokas. Chinmaya Mission centers have become models for teaching India’s rich spiritual heritage and the fundamentals of Vedanta to the next generation. Chinmaya Bala Vihar classes are organized into different grade levels from Kindergarten to Grade 12 to match the child’s learning ability with the teaching material and techniques. In promoting and teaching the universal philosophy of Oneness (Advaita Vedanta), children are made to understand that although Hinduism may appear to have many Gods, the Truth (God) is the one ultimate Reality, and thus it is one God appearing as many forms.

Chinmaya Shishu Vihar

“Shishu” means child and “Vihar” means a safe space. Chinmaya Shishu Vihars are a safe and nurturing space for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers, where they are introduced to basic spiritual concepts through an age appropriate immersive curriculum. Seeded in a parent’s desire to introduce culture and faith at a young age, Chinmaya Shishu Vihars are unique in their ability to promote whole child development and foster a loving spiritual bond within families, as they are in a parent&me format.

50% of the brain’s neurological pathways are formed by the age of 4 and another 30% by age 8. To catch this development and aid the growth of children in their earlier years, Chinmaya Shishu Vihar helps form a spiritual and moral foundation that will always stay with the children.

Chinmaya Shishu Vihars are running successfully all throughout India, Asia Pacific, Australia, United Kingdom, the UAE and USA. The curriculum was developed by Swamini Supriyanandaji, who comes from a Developmental Psychology background. It focuses on creating an environment where parents also learn with their children and see things from the children’s point of view.

The Need For Shishu Vihar

  • Catching them young: As children mature faster there is a greater need to catch them younger and set them on the right path earlier
  • Changing needs: Families are increasingly nuclear or living in all corners of the world. There is a greater need for community and connection to culture
  • Financial Needs: It is more likely that for financial stability, both parents are working therefore there is a greater need for a sense of stability in children
  • Increased Pressure: Due to increased competition, children need to get deeper into academics and sports at an earlier age so time for cultural connection is getting reduced

How Shishu Vihar Works?

Chinmaya Shishu Vihars are a parent & me class where parents are expected to let the child lead the learning. Parents are expected to give their complete attention, therefore cellphones are not permitted in the classroom.

  • It is a discipline free environment where little ones learn at their pace, in the manner that best suits them.
  • Through a combination of tactile and auditory learning, yoga and music, spiritual concepts are introduced to children in an immersive and gentle repetitive manner.
  • Trained sevaks and sevikas, along with parents in the classroom create an environment where children hear songs and stories about, and see beautiful imagery of popular Gods and Goddesses as well as gain familiarity with common festivals and how they are celebrated.
  • One God per month is covered, as curriculum is lined up with the Chinmaya Bala Vihar calendar so that the experience is completely immersive for the youngest learners.
  • Families are given weekly support through tips and whatapp messages, emails that can help reinforce concepts at home.

Geeta Chanting

The Bhagavad Geeta was very dear to Our Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda. He was considered a Foot Soldier of the Geeta. In his own words he says, “The ideal given to children in their early childhood alone can again and again inspire them in their future years of life and supply them with the courage to face their problems, the guts to pursue their purposes diligently, faith in themselves and in their country, and the heroism to live and act according to their own convictions.”

Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda  also reiterates the importance of learning to chant the Geeta. Verse composed by Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda,

गीतापाठेऽर्थजिज्ञासा ततो ज्ञानं भविष्यति।
कृतार्थता हि ज्ञानेन तस्माद् गीतां पठेन्नरः॥

From the recitation of the Bhagavad Gita arises the desire to know its meaning. Thence arises the Knowledge (of the Self). From this Knowledge arises fulfillment. Hence an individual must recite the Bhagavad Gita. The study of the Gita is the key to opening the vast treasure of God’s love for us. It starts with chanting, then study, and over time, assimilating (embracing) that same love wholeheartedly and completely. Gita Chanting allows one to begin this journey here and now, and opening themselves to the embrace of the infinite love.

Bhagavad Geeta Chanting classes are conducted at Bala Vihar every week which is open to children as well as adults. Each Year children in Bala Vihars all across the world learn to chant one assigned chapter. This culminates with the Geeta Chanting Yajna at the end of the year with comprising of Geeta Chanting Yajna Regionals and State Level Competitions. In New York the Regional Chanting Competitions are held in Long Island and the finalists from regionals participate at the Tri-State Geeta Chanting Competition held at Vrindavan New Jersey every year.

Youth-CHYK

CHYK (Youth & Young Professionals) / Class for young adults aims to empower youth with the vision, values, and dynamism for success in all fields.

Two of the greatest gifts from Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda to the younger generation are ‘Chinmaya Bala Vihar’ and ‘Chinmaya Yuva Kendra.’ Both programs provide spiritual and cultural orientation to children and youth of the modern age. Chinmaya Bala Vihar (CMBV) is for children grades Pre K-12, and Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (CHYK) is for university students and young adults (ages 17-30).

The purpose of CHYK, as given by Pujya Gurudev, is to harness dynamic potential. Gurudev said that today’s youth are not useless; they are used less. And that youth are not careless; they are cared for less than they should be. CHYK strives to unite youth and young adults by providing a forum to explore, discuss, and practice Vedanta while strengthening their lives in every endeavor. The objectives of CHYK include:

• To provide a spiritual forum and introduce the philosophy and message of Vedanta
• To unite members spiritually and professionally through satsang and community service
• To build and develop future leaders

CHYK classes include the Vedantic study of: Sanskrit stotrams and prayers, bhajans, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads. CMNY’s special events help purify the mind through sadhana (spiritual means) such as meditation, japa, puja, and community service.

Vedanta Classes

Adult Study Groups – Acharya led or facilitated group discussions.

The adult study group aims to provide the wisdom of Vedanta and the practical means for spiritual growth and happiness, to individuals from any background, enabling them to become positive contributors to society.

Inspired by the vision of Vedanta, thousands of spiritual seekers across the world meet in groups to study and discuss Vedantic texts. Setting aside blind beliefs, they discuss scriptural teachings, deepening their personal philosophical understanding. Study Group members are those who study the scriptures because they have a thirst to imbibe and benefit from the perennial wisdom of the rishis. The systematic Study Group Curriculum has been developed and prescribed by Pujya Gurudev himself, after testing its validity over the years. Today, there are over 1,000 Chinmaya Study Groups worldwide.

What is read or heard, in order to take root, must be thought over (tat chintanam) or reflected upon. The test of clear thinking is in the ability to express our thoughts clearly (tat kathanam). Again, whether our understanding is correct and proper, is brought out in the rational and mutual discussion of the Study Group members (anyonya prabodhanam). Thus, the sincere and diligent student gains a better perspective of our scriptures through this process. Additionally, this forum, in the atmosphere of satsanga, also fosters and develops brotherly understanding and cooperative thinking among the members, and affirms the wisdom of Oneness.

Chinmaya Adult Study Groups follow a syllabus that includes introductory Vedantic texts, Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads. CM New York’s weekly classes and special events are conducted by Resident Brahmacharini Shubhani Chaitanya and Shri George Romney.

Devi Group – Women’s Group

“When a mother is a true seeker, the whole environment of the house changes. Your family does not have to go out to hear a swami. You change, and your environment will follow suit. You are the mother, the model, the Guru.”   – Swami Chinmayanada

The first Devi Group, or Chinmaya Study Group exclusively for women, was inaugurated in November 1958, at Chennai, India, with Swami Chinmayananda’s blessings: ‘Salutations to Mothers! I need not mention how happy I am that a Devi section of Chinmaya Mission is being inaugurated on this sacred day. Indeed, women have been, and even today are, the real custodians of our country’s spiritual culture. The fall of our cultural standard is a true measure of the growing ignorance in the mothers of our society.’
These encouraging words laid the foundation of Chinmaya Mission’s Devi Group culture. The activities of the Group were given a boost in January 1960, when several hundred women delegates from twenty-three towns gathered at the Venguhad Palace at Kollengode, Kerala, for a Chinmaya Devi Conference.

The Devi Group format allows members to feel comfortable in the all-women setting where they are able to freely discuss their doubts, fears and problems without fear of disapproval or censure. ‘No question is unimportant!’ Swami Chinmayananda always insisted. Every question is valid and each member is treated as special and an important part of the group. Thus, women study the scriptures, reflect and are able to apply the concepts to their specific tribulations at home.

Following the same curriculum as Chinmaya Study Groups, Chinmaya Devi Groups have grown over the years as powerful learning forums, open discussion arenas, and healthy support systems for women of all ages.

Swaranjali – Music /Choir Group

Chinmaya Swaranjali is the musical wing of Chinmaya Mission.

Swaranjali means, ‘a musical offering to the divine’. True to its motto, ‘Swara to Ishwara’, Chinmaya Swaranjali members look upon music not as an idle passion, but as a dynamic vehicle to seek the inner source of joy and divinity. It is a movement dedicated to exploring the mystical world of Indian classical music, thereby discovering the veiled joy of infinitude.
Chinmaya Swaranjali members range from professional musicians to people with no musical background, linked through their mutual love for music. ‘Experience directly the beauty and rhythm of the Lord, which is always available in Indian devotional songs. Many of our saints reached Truth through singing for Him,’ said Swami Chinmayananda It, therefore, comes as no surprise that Chinmaya Swaranjali performances always stir and stun audiences, for even a seemingly meek Damaru produces unparalleled music in the hands of Lord Shiva!

“Classical music, rich in its devotional sentiments has the rare and precious ability to raise us to sublime heights. The lyrics and melody in it, kindles the jnana and bhatki elements in us, and fuses the two. This fosters a stirring of the heart, a blissful expansion within, which purifies us, thereby becoming a sadhana.”– Swami Tejomayananda

Chinmaya Mission New York’s Swaranjali happens every first Sunday of the month from October to May from 5:00-6:30pm in the Manhattan area.  Under the current circumstances we have changed the format and time to 4:00 pm – 4:45 in order to better suit an online event. Volunteer

Chinmaya Mission New York is entirely volunteer-run in the spirit of karma yoga.

What is karma yoga?
Dedicating ourselves in selfless service towards a high ideal is the spiritual practice of karma yoga.  Through karma yoga, we learn how to work as a team producing more than what we consume and giving more than what we take.  Each sevak or sevika learns to put aside his or her own likes/dislikes for the benefit of the community and fulfillment of Pujya Gurudev’s Vision.   In this practice, the  sevak/sevika  actually benefits most by growing internally with a pure and quiet mind, preparing them further for their spiritual quest. They also have the privilege of engaging in something so fulfilling which positively touches the lives of many. Read Pujya Gurudev’s article – WHY SERVE?

Currently, Chinmaya Mission New York sevaks and sevikas serve as our Board of Directors, Bala Vihar Coordinators & Teachers, Study Group & CHYK (Chinmaya Yuva Kendra) Coordinators, Swaranjali Coordinators & Singers,  Jnana Yajna Committee etc.
